I too am one of the smug faced crowd but no need to feel bad, although world war one poetry really affected me when I first read it, I think the intention is to highlight that we need to remember the dead as much as we celebrate those that survived.
Might be completely wrong with my interpretation though, never good at analysing poetry more…
